The Type 99A is equipped with a 125mm smoothbore gun, capable of firing a variety of ammunition types including armor-piercing fin-stabilized discarding sabot (APFSDS) rounds, high-explosive anti-tank (HEAT) rounds, and anti-tank guided missiles (ATGMs). It also features a coaxial machine gun and a roof-mounted remotely operated weapon station (ROWWS) with a heavy machine gun for engaging both ground and air targets.  The tank is protected by advanced composite armor and explosive reactive armor (ERA) modules, providing enhanced protection against various threats including kinetic energy penetrators and shaped charges.
